The latest Omega 3 supplements for dry eyes are discussed here by our optician and dry eye expert.
Omega 3 and 6 are essential fatty acids we have to consume in our diet rather than make in the body. DHA Omega 3 fatty acid has various beneficial effects including maintaining normal brain, nerve and eye function. In our diet, these oils can be found in oily fish and flaxseeds (linseeds) avaialbel from health stores that you can add to muesli, cereals or salads.
At the Harvard Schepens Eye Research Institute, USA, researchers investigated whether fish oil protects from dry eye syndrome. The team analysed data from 32,470 female health professionals in the huge Women's Health Study. They found that women whose diets had the most omega-3 fatty acids (as measured by how much fish they ate) were LEAST LIKELY to have dry eyes.
It is well worth considering taking an omega oil supplement alongside your dry eye drops, ointments and blepharitis treatments.
