Macushield
Macushield began as a single product, Macushield Original, a dietary supplement derived from the marigold flower (Tagetes Erecta) that combines the three macular carotenoids: Meso-zeaxanthin, Lutein and Zeaxanthin.
We get these three nutrients exclusively from our diet, the Lutein and Zeaxanthin coming from dark green leafy veg and brightly coloured fruits, and the Meso-zeaxanthin coming from some types of fish and seafood.

What are carotenoids?
Carotenoids are pigments in plants, algae, and photosynthetic bacteria and there are more than 600 different types. These pigments produce the bright yellow, red, and orange colours in plants, vegetables and fruits:
• kale & spinach
• squashes and pumpkin
• avocado
• yellow/orange peppers
• sweet corn
• egg yolks
The three key carotenoids found in the retina and so thought to be good for eye health are: lutein, zeaxanthin and meso-zeaxanthin.
Lutein
A naturally occurring carotenoid we obtain through our diet which collects at the macula at the back of the eye. Lutein is commonly found in dark green, leafy vegetables such as spinach, kale, broccoli or peas.
Zeaxanthin
A naturally carotenoid entirely of dietary origin, which accumulates at the macula at the back of the eye. Zeaxanthin is commonly found in brightly coloured fruit and vegetables such as sweet peppers, sweetcorn and egg yolk.
Meso-zeaxanthin
The most central carotenoid found at the very centre of the macula. Meso-zeaxanthin is less common in foods, only currently being found in some types of fish, and is usually made in the body from lutein.
