Supplements for Glaucoma

Glaucoma  is treated with medical eye drops and/or surgery. It is essential to follow your eye specialists advice precisely on the use of any eye drops, however there are things that you can do yourself to help.

Glaucoma affects vision by damaging the nerve at the back of the eyes. So anything which can help support the nervous system, of which the optic nerve is a key part, or acts as an antioxidant is beneficial.

Vitamins C, B12 & magnesium all have the approved health claim to help contribute to normal functioning of the nervous system. Good dietary sources for these include:

  • Green leafy vegetables (broccoli, brussel sprouts, spinach, cabbage)
  • Legumes (black beans, chickpeas and kidney beans)
  • Liver
  • Tuna
  • Fortified cereal

Vitamins C & E also contribute to the protection of cells from oxidative stress and can also be found in many of the above.

Another powerful antioxidant is co-enzyme Q1O (CoQ10).

Our eyes contain over 100 million photoreceptors which collect information on everything we see and transmit this data through the optic nerve and to the brain.

Do what you can to help maintain your nervous system, of which the optic nerve is a key part, by attending for regular eye examinations and topping up you diet with a supplement containing some or all of these ingredients.
